If you’re doing an apprenticeship in New South Wales, there’s more help on the table than most apprentices realise. The tricky part is that it comes from two different places: the federal government (which runs the big national payments every Australian apprentice can access) and the NSW government (which adds its own state-only extras on top). This guide walks through both, in plain English, so you can see what you might be entitled to and where to check.
One quick note before we start: amounts and rules change, and a website is no substitute for the official source. Wherever we mention a dollar figure, treat it as a guide and confirm the current number before you count on it.
The national payments (available in every state, including NSW)
These come from the Commonwealth through the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System, and they don’t care which state you live in.
Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan
An interest-free loan (indexed to inflation, like a HECS debt) to help with everyday living costs while you’re on apprentice wages. You draw it down in instalments and only start repaying once your income passes a set threshold after you finish. There’s also a discount off the balance if you complete. Confirm the current figures at apprenticeships.gov.au.
Apprentice incentive payments
If your trade is on the national priority list, you may receive direct payments at set milestones. The list and amounts were adjusted from 1 January 2026, so check whether your specific trade qualifies.
Fee-Free TAFE
The Commonwealth and states jointly fund Fee-Free TAFE places, and NSW takes part. Ask your TAFE whether your course is fee-free before you enrol.
Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA)
If you had to move away from home for your apprenticeship, LAFHA is a weekly payment that tapers over your first few years. Confirm current rates through your Apprenticeship Support Network provider.
The NSW-only extras
On top of the national stuff, NSW runs its own support through Training Services NSW and Service NSW.
Travel, accommodation and relocation assistance
If you travel a long way to attend training or relocate to keep your apprenticeship, NSW has a dedicated assistance package. Apply and confirm through Service NSW.
Transport (Opal) concession
Eligible NSW apprentices and new-entrant trainees can get a Transport Concession Entitlement Card for concession fares.
Apprentice vehicle registration rebate
NSW offers a rebate on car registration for eligible first- and second-year apprentices, claimed through Service NSW.
Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships
NSW scholarships supporting apprentices facing financial hardship but showing commitment. Check the Training Services NSW site for the current window.
Help if your apprenticeship falls over
If you lose your job partway through, NSW runs placement support to help you find a new host employer. Don’t just walk away — ask about this first.
