If you’re an apprentice in Queensland, there’s a decent amount of financial help available — but it comes from two separate systems, and plenty of apprentices only ever find one of them. The federal government runs the national payments open to every Australian apprentice, and the Queensland government adds its own state programs on top, including some genuinely valuable free-training offers.
Quick note: amounts and eligibility change regularly. Treat every dollar figure as a guide and confirm the current number with the official source.
The national payments (available in every state, including Queensland)
Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan
An interest-free loan (indexed to inflation, like a HECS/HELP debt) to help with living costs while you’re on apprentice wages. You draw it down in instalments and only repay once your income passes a set threshold after you finish — and you get a discount off the balance if you complete. Confirm current figures at apprenticeships.gov.au.
Apprentice incentive payments
If your trade is on the national priority list, you may receive direct milestone payments. The occupations and amounts were adjusted from 1 January 2026, so check whether your trade qualifies.
Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA)
If you moved away from home to start or continue your apprenticeship, LAFHA is a weekly payment — higher in year one, tapering after. Confirm rates through your Apprenticeship Support Network provider.
Queensland’s own support
Free and fee-free apprenticeships
The standout. Queensland covers course fees for priority apprenticeship qualifications for younger apprentices (generally 100% for eligible under-25s), and school-based apprentices have student contribution fees covered for eligible courses. Queensland has also moved to make construction apprenticeships free more broadly, including for people over 25. Confirm before you enrol at qld.gov.au/education/apprenticeships.
Travel and accommodation allowance
If you travel a long way to attend off-the-job training, Queensland has a travel and accommodation allowance (generally when you travel a set distance to your nearest provider). Apply and confirm the current rates through the Queensland Government apprenticeships pages.
Cost-of-living and disability support
Queensland points apprentices to Centrelink options and provides workplace support and adapted technology for apprentices with disability. If you have a disability or health condition, ask your provider what support is available.
Adult and career-changer apprentices
Starting a trade later? Much of the support still applies — the national payments and loan generally aren’t age-capped, and Queensland’s free construction apprenticeships were broadened to include over-25s. Where age matters most is Centrelink (Austudy from 25, Youth Allowance below). Talk it through with an Apprenticeship Support Network provider before committing.
