Doing an apprenticeship in Victoria? There’s real support available — but it comes from two directions, and a lot of apprentices only ever hear about half of it. The federal government runs the national payments every Australian apprentice can access, and the Victorian government layers its own programs on top through Apprenticeships Victoria and the Free TAFE scheme.
A heads-up: rules and amounts change every year. Use figures as a rough guide and confirm with the official source.
The national payments (available in every state, including Victoria)
Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan
An interest-free loan (indexed to inflation, like a HECS/HELP debt) for living costs while you’re on apprentice wages. You draw it down in instalments and only repay once your income passes a set threshold after you finish; complete and you get a discount off what you owe. Confirm the current numbers at apprenticeships.gov.au.
Apprentice incentive payments
If your trade is on the national priority list, you may get direct milestone payments. Occupations and amounts were adjusted from 1 January 2026, so check whether your trade is included.
Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA)
If you moved away from home to start or continue your apprenticeship, LAFHA is a weekly payment that’s higher in year one and tapers after. Check rates through your Apprenticeship Support Network provider.
Victoria’s own support
Free TAFE — the big one
Victoria’s Free TAFE scheme covers course fees for a long list of priority qualifications, and many trade courses are on it. Confirm two things before you enrol: that your exact course is Free TAFE, and that you personally meet the eligibility criteria. Start at vic.gov.au/free-tafe.
Apprenticeships Victoria and the Apprentice Helpdesk
Victoria runs a dedicated Apprentice Helpdesk with information and guidance on your rights, training, and where to go when something isn’t working — a free first port of call via apprenticeships.vic.gov.au.
Wellbeing and financial support services
Apprenticeships Victoria points apprentices to free services covering mental health, workplace issues and financial concerns. Knowing these exist before you need them is worth it.
Adult and career-changer apprentices
Starting later? Don’t assume the support isn’t for you. Many national payments and the interest-free loan aren’t age-capped, and adult apprentices can still access Free TAFE where eligibility is met. Austudy generally applies from 25; younger apprentices look at Youth Allowance. The loan and LAFHA are designed to soften the pay drop of starting again.
