Plumbing has its own award, separate from the general construction one, and its apprentice rates are structured differently to the building trades. These are the actual Fair Work minimums as at 1 July 2026.
What a plumbing apprentice earns
Legal minimums under the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award (MA000036), for plumbing and mechanical services apprenticeships started after 1 January 2014.

These rates include the industry, plumbing trade and tool allowances. As with the construction trades, Year 12 stops making a difference from third year onward.
Adult apprentices do much better here
This is the standout feature of the plumbing award. An adult apprentice — generally 21 or over at the start — is entitled to $1,046.31 a week ($27.53 an hour) in first, second and third year, rising to $1,099.48 in fourth year.
That’s not a modest loading. A first-year adult apprentice plumber earns roughly $417 a week more than a school leaver on the same job, and holds near-qualified money for three of the four years. If you’re a career changer weighing up trades, plumbing is one of the strongest financial cases in the country for exactly this reason.
Plumbing is licensed everywhere, without exception
Unlike carpentry or concreting, you cannot work as an unsupervised plumber in any Australian state without a licence. Every state and territory regulates it, because the work carries direct public health and safety consequences — backflow into drinking water, gas leaks, failed drainage.
Practically, that means the qualification has hard value the day you finish, and the trade is protected from unlicensed competition in a way most aren’t. It also means your registration and licensing pathway matters as much as your Certificate III, and the requirements differ by state.
Gas, backflow and specialisations
Plumbing splits into specialisations that carry their own endorsements and their own money: gasfitting, roof plumbing, drainage, backflow prevention, medical gas and fire sprinkler work. Fire sprinkler fitting sits on its own classification scale within the same award and pays well above general plumbing at the senior end.
Picking up endorsements after you qualify is one of the more reliable ways to lift income in this trade without going out on your own.
What sits on top of the base rate
The table is ordinary hours. Saturday work runs at time-and-a-half for the first two hours then double time, with Sunday at double time and public holidays at double time and a half. On-call and emergency callout arrangements are common in plumbing and are worth understanding in your agreement, because after-hours work is a significant part of many plumbers’ income.
Your qualification
The trade qualification is CPC32420 Certificate III in Plumbing, typically four years, covering water, sanitary, drainage, roofing, gas and mechanical services. Licensing is then handled separately by your state regulator — the VBA in Victoria, NSW Fair Trading, the QBCC in Queensland and equivalents elsewhere.
