Almost every apprentice starts with no trade experience — that is the whole point of an apprenticeship. Employers expect it. What they want to see is that you will turn up, work hard and be safe. Here is how to land a start from a standing position.
Get the basics that show you are serious
- Get your White Card — it is cheap, quick, and shows you are ready for site.
- Get your driver licence if you can — reliable transport matters to employers.
- Put together a simple resume focused on reliability and attitude.
Show attitude over experience
You cannot compete on experience, so compete on keenness and reliability. Any job history — even casual or unrelated — proves you can turn up and follow instructions. Volunteering, sport and helping on family projects all count.
Go and find the work
- Approach local businesses directly — in person, with a printed resume, still works in the trades.
- Ask a Group Training Organisation, which hires apprentices and places them with host employers.
- Consider a low-cost pre-apprenticeship for a taste and a tickets on your resume.
- Tell everyone you know you are looking — a lot of starts come through word of mouth.
The bottom line
No experience is normal. Get your White Card, lead with reliability, and knock on doors. Persistence lands apprenticeships more than anything on paper.
