Surviving Your First Week on Site: A New Apprentice’s Survival Guide

Your first week on site is nerve-wracking for everyone — it does not mean you are not cut out for it. Here is how to start well, stay safe, and earn respect fast.

Turn up right

Be early, not just on time. Have your White Card, steel-capped boots, hi-vis and any PPE you have been told to bring. Bring water, food and a positive attitude. Turning up prepared says more than anything you can say.

Safety first — always

Never use a tool or do a task you have not been shown. Ask before you act. Wear your PPE even when others do not. Know where the first aid kit is. If something feels unsafe, say so — no one worth working for will give you grief for it.

Site etiquette that earns respect

  • Ask questions — it shows you want to learn, not that you are dumb.
  • Keep the site tidy and your tools where they should be.
  • Do not sit down when there is something to do; keep busy and look for the next job.
  • Own your mistakes early — hiding them is what gets apprentices in trouble.
  • Learn people’s names and remember how they take their coffee.

When it gets tough

The trades can be hard — long days, banter that stings, and real mental-health pressure. If it is getting on top of you, talk to someone. MATES in Construction is there for exactly this on 1300 642 111, and Lifeline is on 13 11 14. In an emergency call 000. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
