If you work in construction, renovation or maintenance in Australia, there is a real chance you will come across asbestos — especially in older buildings. Here is the plain-English rundown of the training involved.
Awareness vs removal — two different things
Asbestos awareness training teaches you to identify likely asbestos-containing materials and what to do if you find them. It is training, not a licence, and many employers require it before you work on older structures. Asbestos removal is different — removing asbestos generally requires a licensed removalist (Class A or B depending on the type), and the licence is issued by your state or territory WHS regulator.
When you need it
You will typically need awareness training if your work could disturb asbestos. If you actually need to remove or handle asbestos, that is licensed work — do not attempt it without the proper licence and controls.
Where to check
- Safe Work Australia: safeworkaustralia.gov.au
- Your state WHS regulator (SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe VIC/QLD/WA, etc.) for licensing rules.
General information only — not safety or legal advice. Asbestos is dangerous; follow your state WHS regulator’s rules.
