RPL Explained: Getting Your Trade Qualification Recognised in Australia

If you have been doing trade work for years without the piece of paper, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) might get you qualified faster. Here is what it is and how it works.

What RPL actually is

RPL is a formal assessment where a registered training organisation (RTO) looks at the skills and experience you already have and, where they match a qualification, gives you credit for them. Instead of sitting through training for things you can already do, you provide evidence and get assessed.

Who it suits

RPL is worth exploring if you have worked in a trade for years (here or overseas), have partly completed training before, or picked up skills on the job without a formal apprenticeship. It will not turn zero experience into a qualification — it recognises genuine, demonstrable skills.

How it generally works

  • Find an RTO that offers RPL for your trade qualification (check training.gov.au).
  • Gather evidence — photos and videos of your work, references, payslips, prior certificates, a work history.
  • Get assessed — an assessor reviews your evidence and may observe you or ask questions.
  • Fill any gaps — if some units are not covered, you complete just those.

Important cautions

For licensed trades like electrical and plumbing, a qualification via RPL is usually only part of the picture — you still have to meet your state licensing requirements. Choose a reputable RTO, and be wary of anyone promising a full qualification with little evidence. Check the RTO on training.gov.au and confirm licensing with your state authority.
